News

Dear Fellow Alumnus,
Congratulations to our upcoming Milestone Anniversary classes: 40th - 1970, 45th - 1965,50th - 1960, 55th - 1955 and 60th - 1950. Please contact your class representative and plan onattending the upcoming Annual Dinner. Contact information for your Class Representative can befound at www.brooklynprep.org or by calling 718-817-5454. Last year the 40th Anniversary Class set a new record for attendance. I hope one of this year’s anniversary classes creates a new record.

The Forty-Ninth Reunion Dinner will be held on Thursday, May 6th, 2010 in the Altman Building at 135 18th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues. At 6:00PM the traditional Mass to honor deceased Alumni will be concelebrated at The Church of Francis Xavier at 46 West 16th St. between 5th and 6th Avenues. The Alumnus of the Year, Dr. David Butler ’57, will be introduced at the end of Mass. Due to the positive response from Alumni attending last year’s Mass we have again asked two Scholarship Recipients to speak.
The price of a Reunion Dinner ticket has been held at $75.00 for the past seven years.Unfortunately the costs of the hall, labor and food and beverage have all increased dramaticallyduring that time. Due to these increases the Board felt it was necessary to raise the price of thisyear’s dinner to $95.00. As always the ticket price includes the open bar and dinner. We aresorry to have to pass on this increase, but we feel it is appropriate to have the dinner be afinancially self-sustaining event. We want all Alumni to know that the generous donations wereceive for the Endowment Fund are used solely to support Jesuit secondary education.

Tickets for the Dinner are available by returning a check in the enclosed envelope or by goingto www.brooklynprep.org where you may purchase tickets online with a credit card. You willalso find information on directions, parking and subways on the BP web site under Ticket Sales. For those that cannot attend, you may wish to purchase a ticket for a Jesuit.

Please check the new BP web site for updated news, photos and videos. You’ll find it is the bestway to stay connected with the Prep and your classmates. If you haven’t already done so, please send us your email address. This is the best way for the BPAA to keep you informed of upcoming events and news. Letters posted on the site from Scholarship recipients validate thegreat gift that the BPAA gives to deserving students. All BP Alumni should be very proud of theover $1,800,000 in scholarships that have been granted to over 360 students since our inception. In an effort to expand the contribution made to Jesuit education by the BPAA Endowment theBoard is contacting foundations to solicit funding for our efforts. If any Alumni knows of afoundation that we should contact please send the information to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

As a special event this spring BPAA is sponsoring a Day of Prayer at St. Ignatius Retreat House,Manhasset, NY on March 31st. Please see the announcement on the back of this letter.

Sincerely,

Jack Barry ’69

Lent For Life
As we move through Lent and go toward Easter, we remind ourselves of what Lent is all about. Immediately we think of Penance. Rather, let me suggest that we might think of Life! Lent culminates not in Good Friday but on Easter Sunday. It is the time of new life. Even the world of nature reflects this new life as we move toward Spring. Look at and listen to the Gospel readings during Lent. They are about Jesus bringing life wherever He goes: in His preaching, especially the parables; in the healing and hope He brings in the miracles. Our penance during Lent is only a means to an end, not the end itself. Our penance is meant to help us to open to the new life the Lord wishes to bring. During Lent Christ is not looking to scold us, but rather to offer each of us an invitation to new life!

What does Joseph A. Califano Jr., the former special assistant to President Lyndon B. Johnson, have In common with John Dockery, the Jets' cornerback?

The same thing that Adm. George W. Anderson Jr., chief of naval operations and Ambassador to Portugal in the Kennedy Administration, shares with William Power Maloney, a lawyer for the underworld figure Joseph Bonanno.

All of them, like William Peter Blatty, the novelist who wrote the screenplay for “John Goldfarb Won't You Please Come Home,” and Kenneth H. Browne, who wrote the play “The Brig,” are alumni of Brooklyn Preparatory School.
